Ready for Adoption

This is a reminder for those who don't work or visit shelters frequently...do give a dog a break, the environment at Metro is pure excitement at best and most dogs have issues behaving properly. Any dog that you see behind a kennel door that is barking ferociously, jumping on the kennel door, snapping, etc. are reacting to being restricted in a small cell. You may see other behaviors that are from anxiety like biting the kennel door, chasing their tail, quiet to ferocious when you change your stance/move away, etc.

Any dog that you see at a shelter that you like please ask an attendant about taking the dog into a play area away from the other dogs and noise of the room or contact the sponsor to find out how to interact with the dog in a less stressful environment. Trainers are available to help you learn the behaviors of your adopted dog before and in after care.

We have several darlings that we are sponsoring, take a look:

Red - In Foster

Neutered male, tan/white Straffordshire Terrier mix. Brutis is about 2 years & 7 months old. Up to date on his vaccinations and given a clean bill of health by Popish Veterinary Clinic.

Brutis loves to go outside and run, knows some commands, and he is learning how not to pull when on a leash.

GEORGE - in Foster

Neutered male, red Strattfordshire Terrier mix. George is about 9 months old. Up to date on his vaccinations and given a clean bill of health by Popish Veterinary Clinic.

George is working with trainer Teresa Fondren who says of him, "I do find him an affectionate dog just needs someone to really work with him on all levels."

George has learned how to sit, lay-down, walks on a leash okay and we're working on 'wait' at the door,. He will fetch the ball but won't give it up so he will probably need really good treats to fix that.

Is George a secret Labrador? Teresa says, "I have a wading pool which he has no trouble getting in, actually has a blast splashing the water on himself and eating water splashes, also he did well at morad park the other day with a young couple and two young dogs. Loooooved the water, seriously jumped in the water and began swimming against the current, enjoying every second of it..."

George is a puppy who loves to run around and play. As he is in a kennel at the shelter without toys or anything of his own he does have an aggressive attitude toward dogs with food, treats, probably toys, barrier aggressive in crate (other dogs outside crate), and in confined spaces like a deck, hallway, etc. He needs a patient teacher who knows that little kids are like this too (mmm MINE MINE MINE) until they learn to share. While not used to crate training, he will sleep in the crate, but will need to be taken out regularly until he learns how to "notify" you he needs to go potty. George doesn't mind car rides but his preferred spot is with his head in your lap (prime petting spot) or laying down in the back seat/floorboard covered up by a blanket for a snooze.

George interacts well with other dogs of sizes and ages but has not been tested with cats/small critters or children. While his trainer cautions that she doesn't recommend him for a family with young children at this time due to his food and toy possession issues, that wouldn't be an issue as long as the adults have a good understanding of how to deal with this because he could perceive children as he does dogs.
